Whilst some couples love to go all in for a big, Instagram-worthy proposal in order to make their partner feel special, small, intimate proposals can be just as magical. Especially if you know your prospective fiancée would prefer to keep the moment just for the two of you, or you really don’t want to end up doing your speech in public, you’ll want to choose a proposal idea that is intimate, rather than showy.

Luckily, an intimate proposal doesn’t have to be boring. At the heart of all good proposals, the idea is the same – you want to show your partner how much you care about them, and that you want to spend your life with them. We’ve rounded up three proposal ideas that your partner is sure to love.

Private dinner

This option has plenty of different avenues you can choose to take to make your proposal tailored to your beloved. First, choose your setting. If you want to have a completely private moment, why not set up a candlelit dinner at your home? If you want to make a surprise experience out of it, leave a note for your partner with a cocktail, asking them to pick out a fancy outfit, and then join you for dinner.

You could put candles (or battery tealights, if you’re worried about fire) to lead the way to the dinner table, and serve them all their favourite food. If you’re not much of a chef and you have the budget, why not hire a private chef for the evening, or get a fancy meal kit?

If they like to eat out, look to hire a private room at a gorgeous restaurant. This way, they get both the benefit of restaurant level food, and your own space. Make sure to let the venue know so that they can give you some privacy and perhaps even a celebratory bottle of fizz.

On a road trip

There is surely no more perfect representation of life being a journey than a road trip. Show your partner that you can handle anything together as you take a trip to all your favourite spots, or perhaps visit places you’ve always wanted to go. During a board game

Board games are perfect for a low-key, fun proposal. With plenty of counters and pieces to allow you to create your special moment, you’ll be sure that your partner will be surprised. If your game has compartments, even better – why not hide your chosen engagement ring in one of them, so that your partner can find it during the game? You could also make your own custom cards for a game, and swap one of the real ones out for one that says ‘will you marry me?’.

Or, if you really want to go all out, why not hide the ring as a reward at the end of an escape room? If your partner loves a challenge, they’ll love an escape room proposal. Just make sure that you work with the staff at the venue in advance to accommodate this – and ensure you make it to the last section!
